Law enforcement and community leaders join Axon in a joint commitment
Axon will fund third-party research into firearm-related deaths between police and the public to better track data and inform solutions
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., October 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Axon (Nasdaq: AXONE), the global leader in public safety technology, announced this week at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) annual conference in dallasthat it partners with law enforcement and community leaders in a lunar lens halve the number of firearm-related deaths between the police and the public by 2033.
This lunar lens serves “to organize and measure the best of our energies and our skills, because this challenge is the one we are ready to accept, the one we do not want to postpone”, declared the American president. John F Kennedy set 60 years ago when he rallied the nation behind a mission to put a human on the moon.
Achievements will not be measured in miles traveled, but in lives saved. Last year in the United States, 1,118 people – 1,054 civilians and 64 officers – lost their lives in gun-related incidents between police and the public, and 2022 is on the same trajectory, according to major data sources. (1) While these losses reflect a complex set of issues, the impact on families and loved ones, communities and our country as a whole is felt deeply and daily.
“We call on our own employees, leaders of the law enforcement profession, community organizations, technology companies, elected officials and others to support and achieve this goal,” said Axon CEO and Founder. Rick Smith said. “It’s not Axon’s moonshot. It’s our moonstroke. And we all have a role to play in achieving that goal.”
Recent roundtables and discussions with law enforcement, community and city leaders have revealed broad support for this lunar goal – including the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the Association of Afro Americans (AAMA), Major County Sheriffs of America (MCSA), the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), and the National Policing Institute, among others.
- “We congratulate Axon for bringing together this coalition. Police officers put their lives on the line every day in service to their communities. We are committed to working with Axon and all groups involved to find new ways to keep our officers and the public safe,” said Patrick YoesNational President of the Fraternal Order of Police.
- “We choose to do the hard things in life because we can and because we have to. And make no mistake, it’s a difficult, fraught, seemingly insurmountable thing. But it’s vital for sanctity. of life. And so we have to keep trying, keep talking, keep innovating and keep moving forward, together,” says Phyllis Dickerson, CEO of the Association of African American Mayors. “I look forward to joining Axon and others in critical discussions as we seek solutions that ensure justice for all, while adopting prevention and response measures that keep our communities safe.”
- “Having served as chief of two major police departments in the city – San Jose and now dallas — I have seen firsthand the devastating impact that firearm-related deaths have on our officers and our communities,” says dallas The Chief of Police Edgardo (Eddie) Garcia. “We were proud to be the host agency for the IACP’s annual conference and expo in our city this week, although the previous days had been some of the most tragic for law enforcement in memory. My fellow chiefs and I are inspired by this lunar lens, and I hope it brings both police and community leaders together to address such a critical issue.”
- “America’s leading county sheriffs are uniting with Axon and our law enforcement partners across the country to achieve this ambitious goal of reducing the number of firearm-related deaths by 50% involving police and the public,” the MCSA chairman and Seminole County Sheriff said. Denis Lemme. “This goal will only be achieved by working together and using the best practices and tools available to create safe communities. Where law enforcement and the public can return home safely at the end of each day , we have succeeded in our mission.”
- “Members of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) stand with Axon and all community and law enforcement partners in this mission to make our profession safer and more effective. », declares the president of NOBLE. Brenda Goss andrew. “This is long overdue and, when achieved, will help ensure that we have safer and more secure communities.”
Recognizing that the solution goes beyond technology, Axon will continue to host roundtables to facilitate open discussions and the sharing of perspectives, seeking to deliver research-based and accountable solutions.
Axon also enlisted the Intergovernmental Research Institute (IIR), a private, nonprofit research organization, to track gun-related deaths between police and the public. The IIF will thoroughly research, collect and analyze information relating to each incident. Axon is funding the research in hopes that more data will help provide insight into common contributing factors to gun-related deaths between police and the public, and better inform solutions. Data collection will include all shooting deaths in all U.S. jurisdictions involving officers and civilians, where an officer or civilian died. The IIR will publish quarterly and annual reports. The first report with data from 2022 will be published in mid-2023.
Axon is committed to investing in better technology, training and data that will help drive better outcomes and build trust between law enforcement and the communities they protect and serve. Axon intends to invest in accelerated advances in non-lethal and de-escalation tools and training; next-generation cameras and evidence capture devices; real-time response and communication tools; community impact, engagement and feedback solutions; and a more comprehensive and concrete use of force and response to resistance reports.
