It’s called Hotel Hyundai, and it’s an electric vehicle-powered getaway inspired by market research showing that Britons are looking for sustainable travel options that are both affordable and eco-friendly.
The Korean carmaker has set up the Hyundai Hotel site in Essex, where it is hosted by British food critic and Masterchef Grace Tooth.

The hotel is made up of three key areas. Master suites, a restaurant and bar and an outdoor movie theater. Each sequel gets its own Hyundai Ioniq 5 to plug in for power – a move that highlights the hatchback/crossover’s impressive battery capacity and the car’s V2x capabilities. Witness it:
- Each of the guest suites has its own Ioniq 5 that powers everything from lights to appliances.
- The restaurant/bar has its own Hyundai and continues the sustainability theme with a menu of locally grown food and drink; even the espresso machine is powered by the Ioniq!
- The cinema area is equipped with a movie projector, outdoor speakers and a popcorn machine, all powered by the Ioniq 5, thanks to its V2x capability.
More and more electric vehicles are equipped with V2L (vehicle to charge) or V2G (vehicle to grid) capability. This allows electric vehicles to act as a rolling generator when there is no mains power to power appliances or accessories, and as a backup battery for the grid itself. Hyundai seems to be hoping that by using this capability to show how its Ioniq 5 EV can power a vacation rental, this may help dispel some of the myths surrounding the supposed ‘voltage’ of electric vehicles on the grid.
I think it’s a great way to show off the car’s capabilities, even if it feels a bit forced – like, why go camping if you don’t want to camp, you know? But that’s a glamping vs camping argument we can have in the comments I think. Enjoy!
