Volvo’s flagship electric SUV will debut on November 9 and will be dubbed the EX90, CEO Jim Rowan confirmed in a media presentation on Wednesday.
Doubling down on its reputation for safety, Volvo also claims the EX90 will be its safest model yet, thanks in large part to next-generation sensors and software that can reduce crashes resulting in serious injury or death by 20 percent.

Volvo said last year that the then-unnamed electric SUV would be will have lidar and next-level software and processing. The EX90’s sensor suite is expected to include a roof-mounted lidar sensor, eight cameras, five radar sensors and 16 ultrasonic sensors to activate various driver assistance features. This will include hands-free highway driving assistance called Ride Pilot.
One of the new technologies debuting on the EX90 will be an advanced driver distraction monitor that uses in-house developed algorithms to measure concentration through the gaze. This will detect distraction, fatigue or other forms of inattention “beyond what has been possible in a Volvo car to date”, the automaker said.

Volvo is expected to sell both the EX90 and a next-generation XC90, a model currently sold with gasoline and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The next-gen XC90 will use a new platform dubbed SPA2, but the EX90 is expected to get his own skateboard platform.
The South Carolina plant where the EX90 will be built will be ready to switch between the hybrid XC90 and this all-electric model. The same factory will also build the Polestar 3 Electric SUV for the brand derived from Volvo. Volvo said it will make this factory fully electric before the others, even those in China.
